I live and breathe claims and see where things come unstuck. A lot of the time there can be a better outcome at claim time if you take a few steps before the event.
Here are my top 10 TIPS for home, contents and car claims.
1. Consider your whole home
Age, square metres, garden sheds, garages, fences, retaining walls, decks, patios, driveways. These all need to be covered. A good broker will help you identify everything that needs to be included under your sum insured.
2. Keep a list of all your contents
Including all proof of ownership, reciepts, invoices and manuals.
3. Keep a video or photograph of what is inside your home
Save it somewhere safe in event of fire such as a memory stick or ‘cloud’ website. I have seen claims for items such as stereos and cameras turned down because the owner can’t prove ownership. Proof of ownership is on you!
4. Tell your insurer about modifications to your vehicle
You are only insured for what the insurance company knows about. If you’ve added a sports kit or mag wheels they won’t be covered unless you’ve notified your broker or insurer.
5. Is your vehicle sum insured realistic?
Just because you’ve said your car is worth $20,000 doesn’t mean the insurer will pay you $20,000 for it. If you have a total loss claim the insurer will check the market value of similar cars and that is what you’ll be paid.
6. Lock your vehicle
It sounds simple but this catches people out all the time and insurers can refuse your claim if your vehicle was not locked.
7. Lock your craft
8. Items stored in your craft or boat also need to be stored in locked or secure compartments
9. If you are moving get transit insurance
Don’t assume you are automatically covered when you move, separate cover may be required.
10. If you are building - contact your broker before you start
If you are doing any structural renovations to your home, before you start contact your Broker to make sure you are covered, you may need to take out additional insurance.
