Rothbury launches interactive invoice

Published Date: 06th Nov 2017 | Category: News

Rothbury Insurance Brokers has rolled out a new innovative invoice designed to enhance client experience and provide them with an instant connection to the company.

“An invoice is not the first thing that comes to mind when connecting and staying in touch with our clients and is often overlooked,” says Rothbury Managing Director Roger Abel.

“Client touchpoints are a big deal to insurance brokers and this is a great opportunity to connect with our clients and provide them with the confidence that we’ve got their needs covered.”

Gone is the old fashioned layout with dense terms and conditions, and perforation for cheques that are seldom used. Instead the invoice creates a personal touchpoint with clients, featuring brokers’ photos, contact details, improved readability and interactive payment options for monthly instalment or payment online.

“We expect the interactive invoices will also reduce our aged receivables as clients click through and take action directly from the invoice,” says Abel.

“Research has gone into this. We looked at others in the industry, as well as telcos and utilities, to see how they presented information to clients. Then we went about setting up a cross-functional team from finance, IT, broking and marketing to develop something that would be clear, friendly and helpful for our clients.”

“It’s taken time to nail the technical aspects and there have been some challenges along the way, but the technology we have now gives us more efficient processes and  can customise our invoices to promote products and schemes, and ultimately provide a more personalised experience to clients.”

Rothbury is the largest majority New Zealand owned general insurance brokerage and sends out more than 82,000 invoices to 40,000 clients, to the value of almost $200 million a year.

Rothbury’s latest innovation follows on from the release of Version 3 of the My Rothbury App, a smartphone app that over 6,000 clients have downloaded to gain instant access to their insurance information anytime, anywhere.

Rothbury opens Waiheke office

Published Date: 19th Oct 2017 | Category: News

Rothbury Insurance Brokers has opened Waiheke Island’s first fire and general insurance broker office so businesses and home-owners can be serviced locally.

Commercial brokers Noel Barkley and Lianne Stanners and domestic broker Carolyn Sherwen will staff the Ostend office.

Noel, a former All Whites soccer player, business owner and corporate executive who has been a Waiheke holiday or weekend resident for seven years, is now based on the island. Lianne has over 30 years’ insurance broking experience specialising in small business owners such as tradespeople, master painters and owner drivers.  Meanwhile domestic broker Carolyn Sherwen has built a strong reputation for looking after Waiheke home owners’ insurance needs.

“Waiheke has its own unique special character and by putting ourselves on the spot we aim to become woven into that local fabric,” says Noel. “The new Waiheke office is here to better serve our current clients on the island and to grow the business – we’re here to stay.”

Rothbury already has over 200 commercial and domestic clients on Waiheke, including the Batch Winery and Waiheke Island Football Club, which were previously serviced from the company’s Auckland branch.

With the opening of the Waiheke office Rothbury, a New Zealand majority owned and operated business founded in 1950, now has 18 locations throughout the country.

Rothbury partners with Lifetime

Published Date: 13th Dec 2016 | Category: News

Auckland, 12 December 2016 – Rothbury Insurance Brokers has taken a 19.5% cornerstone stake in Lifetime Group, a full service financial advisory network with 90 staff across New Zealand who advise on loans, insurance, investment and planning.

Secondly Rothbury has purchased Lifetime’s general insurance broking and premium funding operations. Lifetime’s Christchurch headquarters in Moorhouse Avenue will become the home of Rothbury’s Christchurch branch.

Thirdly Rothbury Life’s life insurance and mortgage team of 22 based in Auckland, Tauranga, Hamilton and Wellington will become part of Lifetime Group, which currently has advisers in 13 New Zealand locations. Rothbury Life will continue to operate under the Rothbury Life brand.

In addition, Rothbury Managing Director Roger Abel will join the Lifetime board as a director along with Rothbury Group Director Owen Shaw as alternate.

The partnership deal cements a working relationship and bond between the two businesses, creating one of the strongest financial services businesses in New Zealand.

Established in 1950, Rothbury is now a leading New Zealand insurance broking group with 14 broking branches and 35,000 clients. The transfer of Lifetime’s general insurance broking team of 14 will grow the number of people working for Rothbury nationwide to 250.

Mr Abel said the partnership, which will take effect on 22 December 2016, creates a broader service offering for Rothbury’s and Lifetime’s combined clients.

Lifetime Group is a well-known and respected business established in 1999. “We’re both national-operating companies with very similar cultures and complementary client offerings,” says Mike Jones, CEO, Lifetime Group. “There’s a natural alignment of values – our organisations each take pride in our integrity, ethics and accountability.

Mr Abel said the partnership presents opportunities for Rothbury Insurance Brokers, Rothbury Life and Lifetime to all benefit, grow and share collective knowledge both within the businesses and with clients.

“Lifetime Group’s client-focussed approach to delivering independent professional service aligns perfectly with Rothbury’s values. Rothbury already has offices in Christchurch and Ashburton, but this step provides a great opportunity to strengthen our presence across Canterbury, New Zealand’s second largest region.

“Our business has had a very successful last few years with more new clients entrusting their insurance needs with Rothbury than ever before. Rothbury was named the Large Broking Company of the Year for the third year running at the New Zealand Insurance Industry Awards in November, which shows we are gaining significant momentum. I firmly believe this opportunity will be hugely beneficial to both businesses and is great news for our future growth.”

“Reasonable bloke” turns around haulage industry perceptions of insurance

Published Date: 05th Sep 2016 | Category: News

Eight years ago former New Zealand Heavy Haulage Association (NZHHA) Chairman Paul Britton did not really even want to be introduced to Rothbury Wilkinson’s Manager Corporate Risks and Lloyd’s Conrad Shanly.

Three weeks ago at the NZHHA conference in Christchurch Paul gave Conrad exceptional recognition for a person from outside the haulage industry – the Chairman’s award, made to persons or organisations who give service or assistance to the Association or its members.

“It would be fair to say that I didn’t really want to even know this guy when he was first introduced to me and the rest of the board,” Paul told conference delegates. “Now I think he is a pretty reasonable bloke.

“Conrad Shanly and Rothbury Wilkinson have been willing to go the extra mile as a broker to our Association. Since 2008 his organisation has been a regular sponsor and attendee at our conferences. Since then he has developed customised insurance packages for both the house moving and pilot sectors and is also now the Association’s insurance broker.”

“But it’s the unpaid work he and his company do for the Association that I want to recognise him for. He has been willing to contribute his own and his company’s time towards the analysis of specific insurance issues for the Association on behalf of the industry. And, following on from that, he has sought legal opinions from his company’s lawyer on various matters raised by the Association at no cost to us.

“Last year at our conference in Wellington he provided the lawyers who spoke to the incoming health and safety legislation and at our Tauranga conference brought along former All Black and Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder to speak … again at no cost to the Association. More recently he has been instrumental in introducing the house removal sector to Heartland Bank to help with financing of our removal customers. The Chairman’s Award is a chance to say thank you.”

Conrad agrees with Paul’s comments: “It was a major effort to even get in the door to talk to these guys eight years ago so now to receive the Chairman’s Award and be considered a pretty reasonable bloke is a significant change in their perception.” He said he was greatly honoured to receive the award and pleased that he and Rothbury Wilkinson has been able to assist the NZHHA with insurance and legal matters.

My Rothbury 2.0 gives more information to clients

Published Date: 15th Jun 2016 | Category: News

Insurance app My Rothbury 2.0 has been released giving Rothbury Insurance Brokers’ clients more information in the palm of their hands.

My Rothbury enables commercial, farm and domestic clients to view their insurance policies, sums insured and excesses as well as contact details of their broker, account balances and claims information.

Rothbury managing director Roger Abel says the My Rothbury 2.0 enhancements have been based on client feedback.

“For example, My Rothbury 2.0 now provides information on cover for valuable items that may be on a home contents policy instead of simply the sum insured.

“With My Rothbury 2.0 there is more flexibility for the order in which insured items appear.  The new version also offers a more descriptive claims summary, helping clients to manage and review more easily when they have multiple claims on the go.

“Clients often need to provide certificates to prove their public liability cover when they take on new work or contracts. With My Rothbury 2.0 clients can now request certificates quickly and simply through My Rothbury if they prefer this to calling or e-mailing their broker.”

The update has been released a year after the app was first launched and before rivals have produced apps for commercial clients.

Mr Abel said 3,000 clients now have My Rothbury and unsolicited feedback included “fantastic innovation”, “extremely convenient”, “very handy for viewing my broker’s contact details” and “a great reference point for sums insured and cover in place.”

He said Rothbury is committed to continuous innovation and is always listening to clients to improve its offerings. “Our decision to invest in the app is supported by the latest stats showing the burgeoning growth in mobile internet access and apps.”

Mary Meeker, an analyst with leading Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers, reports that in the United States in 2015 mobile went well past tipping point and accounted for 51% of internet usage compared with 42% for desktop and laptop combined.  Yahoo’s Flurry analytics shows 90% of time spent online on mobile is spent on apps and in March 2016 business apps were the second most popular category, with a share of 10% of all active apps being business apps.

The My Rothbury app is available on both iOS and Android smartphones.

Award winning art deco at Rothbury Hawkes Bay

Published Date: 16th May 2016 | Category: News

In February Rothbury Hawkes Bay moved to new premises on Marine Parade in Napier. The building, Cosmopolitan House, opened at the end of 2015 and Rothbury was lucky to secure space on Level 1 of the three level property.

The move presented an opportunity for the Hawkes Bay branch to inject some local art deco character into their work environment.

Branch Manager, Kim Matthews says that she wanted to do something a ‘bit different.’  So, she set to work with local sign writers Sign It Up on a glass decal that runs down the entire length of the office.

Dean Evenson, Sign It Up Owner and Operator, has over 25 years experience in the industry and completed his apprenticeship in the bay. When it comes to working with clients Dean says ‘the only limit is your imagination’. And the Sign It Up team put their imaginations to work at the Rothbury office.

The end result is an etching that features local landmarks including Pania of the reef, art deco buildings and motifs that are part of Napier’s DNA.

Sign It Up went on to win two gold awards from the NZ Sign & Display Association for their work.

Dean Evenson of Sign It Up says, “A lot of people were blown away by what we’d done.  To win two golds, including the Open category against the big boys, is huge!  Thanks to Rothbury for wanting to do something a bit innovative and allowing us to create this really unique interior for them.”

Kim says they will frame copies of the awards and display them in the Rothbury office.  “Dean and his team were stoked to be recognised like this. Our new offices are pretty special and we love being in our new home”.

Where football meets insurance

Published Date: 13th May 2015 | Category: News

This June, New Zealand is set to play host to the FIFA U-20 World Cup. As we prepare for this exciting event, it got us thinking: Surely there must be some lessons about insurance that business owners - many of whom are football fans themselves - can learn from the sport.

As it happens, here are three points you'll want to keep in mind if you want to stop your business from being hit with a red card.

1. Defence can be the best offence

Not every team opts for an all-out attack. Football strategy also involves using the midfield and defence to choke the opponent's attack, preventing them from ever scoring in the first place.

This serves as a useful reminder about the value of insurance to a business' success. While many think the path to prosperity is larger profits and expansion, it also rests on protecting what you already have. Having general liability insurance in place, for instance, can help ensure your profit margin isn't sapped by having to pay out damages to a third party.

2. A single event can make a difference

Soccer is a low-scoring sport. In fact, 2010's FIFA World Cup Final is well-known for being one of the most low-scoring in history, at 1-0. In football, a single goal can mean either victory or defeat.

This is not dissimilar to accidents or events that affect businesses. While you might not think a fire, flood, earthquake or some other kind of natural disaster is likely to affect your enterprise, it only needs to happen once to send you into potential financial ruin. But with material damage insurance or business interruption insurance, your business can protect itself from the impact of an unexpected event.

3. The play has to match the job

Every position in football has a specific job to carry out. The striker sticks around up front. The midfielders are utility players, doing a little bit of everything. Meanwhile, the defenders wait toward the back, ready to stifle the opposing attack and prevent shots on goal. All of these positions adopt a style of play that matches their purpose.

In the same way, if you want your insurance to protect your business, it's most effective for it to be specifically tailored to your occupation. For instance, at Rothbury, we offer specialised solutions for professions as diverse as architects, brick and block layers, landlords and photographers. Each of these careers has specific pain points that a general insurance solution may not adequately cover.

FIFA U-20 World Cup a potential game changer for Rothbury

Published Date: 11th Feb 2015 | Category: News

Rothbury Insurance Brokers hopes being named a National Supporter and the Official Insurance Broker for the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2015 will be a game changer for the company.

The FIFA U-20 World Cup is FIFA’s second largest men’s event after the FIFA World Cup itself and the 2015 tournament is expected to be the biggest celebration of global football ever seen in New Zealand.

The tournament will take place over three weeks in June across seven venues – Whangarei, Auckland, Hamilton, New Plymouth, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. More than half a million tickets are expected to be sold.

Rothbury Managing Director Roger Abel is excited by FIFA’s appointment of Rothbury as a national supporter and official insurance broker. "With the growing popularity of football in this country and New Zealanders’ love of sport we are sure the FIFA U-20 World Cup will generate a buzz across the country.

"This is the first time Rothbury has taken on a national sponsorship deal. The business has been looking for opportunities to increase our brand awareness and we believe this is a great opportunity to do that.

"FIFA will be promoting this tournament to New Zealand sports fans, as well as football mums and dads getting involved with their kids and the football community. Many of these people are business owners and decision makers of the type that Rothbury manages insurance for – it is a great match of interests."

FIFA U-20 World Cup CEO, Dave Beeche said he was delighted to have Rothbury on board as a supporter and official broker. "Rothbury is a well established and very highly regarded New Zealand insurance broker and we look forward to working with the company to stage a successful event in 2015."

As official insurance broker for FIFA U-20 World Cup Rothbury will be responsible for providing a range of insurance products and services which are integral to the success of the event.

The announcement of this partnership with FIFA follows closely on Rothbury winning the Large Broking Company of the Year award at the New Zealand Insurance Industry Awards in November 2014. The awards are run by the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF).

Rothbury Insurance Brokers was also named as a finalist in the 2013 and 2014 Kenexa Best Places to Work Survey.

Rothbury named 2014 ANZIIF Large Broking Company of the Year

Published Date: 10th Nov 2014 | Category: News

A team effort, working as client advocates and trusted advisers, helped Rothbury Insurance Brokers win the 2014 ANZIIF Large Broking Company of the Year award, says a delighted managing director Roger Abel.

It is the first time in the three year history of the New Zealand Insurance Industry Awards that Rothbury has won this category – one of 11 presented at a ceremony in Auckland on Thursday, 6 November. The awards are run by the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF).

"We are over the moon to have won the Large Broking Company of the Year award for 2014," says Mr Abel. "It is through the collective effort of all of our people actively working as trusted advisers to solve our clients’ problems that we were able to achieve this success.

"We work really hard to put our clients first and listen to their needs. We have a great team of people around the country looking after our clients with an on-going commitment to delivering great service and advice."

Mr Abel said he hoped the recognition the award provided would encourage more people to entrust Rothbury with their business and personal insurance needs.

The Large Insurance Broking Company award, sponsored by NZI, is for insurance broking companies who have demonstrated strong performance and outstanding service for their customers in New Zealand. Companies whose turnover (defined as gross written premium transacted) is more than $50 million are eligible for this award.

Entrants are required to make a 2,000 word submission addressing:

  • Service levels and responsiveness to clients’ needs
  • Product suitability and ongoing measurement and review processes
  • Support and education service to clients
  • Staff development to ensure the most informed advice and service to clients
  • Suitability of risk management assistance
  • Client satisfaction

Rothbury’s entry highlighted the company’s monthly Pulse Survey that calculates Net Promoter Scores (NPS) and gathers client feedback on claims and renewals for domestic and commercial clients. In seven years the company’s NPS for commercial renewals has climbed from +22 to +40 as a result of client satisfaction for service quality and timeliness.

NPS is an internationally recognised measure of client satisfaction, calculated by taking the percentage of "promoter" customers and subtracting the percentage of "detractor" customers.

Another innovation highlighted in the entry was webinars introduced in 2013 that deliver regular training to the company’s 15 branches and 220 staff around the country. The webinars have resulted in more learning opportunities and less time away from home towns for staff.

It’s this client focus and the opportunity to broaden Rothbury’s potential that has led Wilkinson’s to being the 15th Rothbury broking branch. The addition also increases the number of people working for Rothbury nationwide to 220.

The business is based in Wellington with a team of 18 people, and will remain as a stand alone operation. During the coming months Wilkinson’s will be transitioning to take on Rothbury branding.

“Rothbury has been focusing on a number of growth opportunities including expanding our corporate capability. This partnership is great news for our future growth and an exciting time for the business.

“We are looking forward to working with the Wilkinson’s team, and I firmly believe this partnership will be hugely beneficial to both businesses,” says Roger Abel, Rothbury Insurance Brokers Managing Director.

Rothbury and Steadfast connect

Published Date: 24th Apr 2013 | Category: News

Rothbury has become the founding New Zealand partner of Australian insurance broking network Steadfast – the largest and best resourced insurance broker network in the region.

Established in 1996, Steadfast has 280 brokerages represented by 420 offices serving more than one million businesses. Steadfast brokers account for A$4.1 billion of the total A$16.9 billion Australian insurance broking premiums.

It will be ‘business as usual’ for Rothbury clients and staff, as Steadfast brokers continue to operate under their own banners.

The benefits of being a member of the Steadfast network include:

  • Client service: Steadfast has an array of customer service tools such as Broker Assist to help deal with client concerns and issues. Professional development: Rothbury staff will be able to access Steadfast Campus on-line learning and may attend the Steadfast Convention, the biggest general insurance conference in Australasia.
  • Buying power: Steadfast brokers collectively account for more than 20% of the Australian insurance broking industry. That’s a lot of leverage. Insurance options: Natural disasters like the Christchurch earthquake and Australia’s fires and floods are making it harder and harder to get well-priced cover. Steadfast membership will plug Rothbury into more insurance options and improved access for hard-to-get insurance.
  • Standard policies: Why reinvent the wheel when it comes to writing and agreeing policies with insurers? Steadfast negotiates standard “best in class” policy wording with insurers. This is the start of a new era for Rothbury. As the New Zealand members of the most powerful insurance broker network in the region, we are better equipped to look after our clients’ insurance needs. We are also on track with our goal to strengthen Rothbury with more branches and more people.
