Insurance Brokers since 1950
Our name, Rothbury, dates back to Ron Rothbury’s insurance business, founded in 1950. It was an Auckland based insurance consultancy with the aim of providing clients in the region greater support in insurance matters.
In 1992, Roger Abel purchased the business from Ron Rothbury and it wasn't too long before branches opened in Whangarei, Wellington and Christchurch.
Meanwhile, Commercial and General Insurance Brokers was founded 1990 in Invercargill by Doug Thompson, Owen Shaw and Tony Butson. This business quickly branched out across the country and as the two venture's paths crossed a common vision was shared. These 4 entrepreneurial kiwis shared a dream to be the best insurance brokers in New Zealand.
What was unique to these broking businesses was that rather than being insurance & agencies tied to just one insurance company, they were independent. Client advocates. Focused on giving expert advice and offering solutions that best met their clients' needs.
On April 1 2005 Rothbury and Commercial & General merged creating a NZ wide broker network.
Since that time we've grown through partnerships with existing brokers, investment in start-up branches and the development of complementary insurance businesses.
In April 2013 we became the founding New Zealand partner of Steadfast, an Australian insurance broker network.
Annually, Steadfast Brokers generate $5billion (FY13) in insurance sales and look after the insurance needs of more than one million businesses across Australia and New Zealand. Being part of Steadfast allows us to leverage buying power, negotiating strength and access to professional development and customer service tools.
We've come a long way since Rothbury was started in 1950 but our commitment to clients is still the centre of everything we do.
