Christmas Shopping and Trolley Collisions

A recent study by IAG found that this time of year (October to January) was the most common time for claims of damage to vehicles by shopping trolleys.

According to the research, 200 claims a year originate from this type of accident, reaching up to $15,000 in repair work for more expensive cars.

That's a lot of money for accidental damage by a shopping trolley, although maybe not surprising when you think that a loaded trolley will weigh up to 50kgs and can reach speeds of 15km/h.  IAG put the increase in claims Oct-Jan down to all the shopping that happens during the busy Christmas period.

The study serves as a reminder of why you should hold vehicle insurance.

At this time of year, there is certainly no shortage of collisions in carparks.  If you didn't witness the damage occurring to your car then there's no way of tracing who should assume liability, meaning your only course of action to get the damage repaired is through your insurer.

How can you protect your vehicle?

There are three different insurance options that can protect your vehicle.  To ensure you are covered for damage by a shopping trolley I'd recommend you have Comprehensive Car Insurance.

Comprehensive Car Insurance

  • Covers damage to someone else's property for which you are liable,
  • Covers damage caused to your own vehicle as a result of an accident or theft,
  • Be aware if no one admits liability for the damage caused you will need to pay your own excess when having damage repaired, people are often unaware of this until they come to claim.

Other types of cover

The are other types of vehicle insurance available will not provide cover if your vehicle is damaged by a shopping trolley as they only provide cover for damage you have caused to other people's property.

Third party

  • Only covers damage to someone else's property for which you are liable,
  • Will not cover your vehicle for damage by a shopping trolley.

Third party fire and theft

  • Covers damage to someone else's property for which you are liable,
  • Covers the cost of replacing/repairing your vehicle if it is damaged in a fire or stolen,
  • Will not cover your vehicle for damage by a shopping trolley.

Finding the right level of insurance for your needs will ultimately depend on your budget and the cost of repairing or replacing your vehicle in the event of an accident. Once you've found the right level of cover, you can certainly feel a lot safer as you finish your last-minute Christmas shopping.
