If you are in business, insurance should be an essential part of your risk management strategy. For individuals, insurance is a way to limit your risk of personal financial loss as you never quite know what might be around the corner.
Rothbury had a busy year in 2015, dealing with a variety of different claims from a number of sources. And we weren't the only ones, as figures from the Insurance Council of New Zealand show insurers dealt with 20 per cent more claims than the previous 12-month period.
In a normal year $2.55 billion is paid in insurance claims to New Zealanders and New Zealand businesses. That equals $7 milliion per day.
Rothbury has 35,000 clients and our infographic looks at the most common claims for our clients in 2015.

Motor Vehicle Accidents Most Common in North Island
Comprehensive motor vehicle insurance covers you for accidents in your vehicle, including your liability if you damage someone else’s vehicle or property. It's worth being aware that because cracked windscreens are a major cause of accidents on the road, your policy will likely cover the cost of having a cracked windscreen fixed without requiring you to pay an excess.
What our clients claimed for in the South Island
58 per cent of claims were for accidental damage in Ashburton.
Accidental damage is damage to property or belongings caused by an unexpected one off accident. Home Insurance, Contents Insurance and Material Damage Insurance for businesses will cover this type of claim.
Other claims
Rothbury offers a range of insurance types, and although these might be the most common claims we've dealt with, they're far from the only ones. Other types of claims that our team dealt with frequently in 2015 were:
- Accidental loss – loss of belongings
- Water damage – water damage from a one off unexpected event
- Liability – claims by businesses for liability such as statutory liability or professional indemnity.
